Squarespace Hidden Costs: Every Fee Beyond the Plan Price

The advertised price ($16 to $99 per month) is the starting point, not the final cost. Domain renewals, email hosting, scheduling add-ons, and processing fees change the real math.

Every Additional Cost Explained

Custom domain renewal

$20 to $70/year

Your first custom domain is free for the first year on annual plans. After year one, you pay renewal fees. A standard .com domain renews at about $20/year through Squarespace. Premium TLDs like .design, .store, or .photography cost $40 to $70/year. You can save by purchasing domains elsewhere (Namecheap charges $10 to $15/year for .com) and pointing DNS to Squarespace.

Google Workspace email

$7/user/month ($84/year)

Squarespace does not include email hosting on any plan. The official add-on is Google Workspace at $7 per user per month. For a team of 3, that is $252/year on top of your plan. Free alternatives exist: Zoho Mail offers a free tier for custom domains, and you can set up email forwarding for free through Cloudflare or your domain registrar.

Scheduling (Acuity)

$14 to $45/month

Squarespace Scheduling (formerly Acuity Scheduling) is a separate paid add-on: Emerging at $14/month (1 calendar, 1 staff), Growing at $23/month (6 calendars, 6 staff), and Powerhouse at $45/month (36 calendars, 36 staff). If you are a service business that needs appointment booking, this is a significant added cost. Free alternatives like Calendly's free tier work for simple use cases.

Email Campaigns

$7 to $48/month

Squarespace Email Campaigns starts at $7/month for 500 emails and scales to $48/month for 250,000 emails. Annual billing gives a 30% discount. Compared to Mailchimp's free tier (500 contacts, 1,000 emails/month), the Squarespace tool is more integrated but more expensive for basic use cases.

Payment processing fees

2.5% to 2.9% + $0.30

Stripe and Square charge processing fees on every transaction: Basic at 2.9% + $0.30, Core and Plus at 2.7% + $0.30, Advanced at 2.5% + $0.30. These are industry-standard rates. International cards cost an additional 1%. At $5,000/month in sales, processing fees range from $125 (Advanced) to $145 (Basic), not including the flat $0.30 per transaction.

Monthly billing premium

Up to $480/year extra

Paying monthly instead of annually costs significantly more: Basic is $25 vs $16/month (+$108/yr), Core is $33 vs $23 (+$120/yr), Plus is $54 vs $39 (+$180/yr), Advanced is $139 vs $99 (+$480/yr). Monthly billing also does not include the free domain for the first year.

Year-One vs Year-Two Real Cost

Year one benefits from the free domain on annual plans. Year two adds domain renewal costs. "Min" assumes plan only. "Typical" adds one email user. All figures use annual billing.

Core$276$0 / $40$84$276 / $360$316 / $400

How to Minimize Your Total Cost

  • 1.Pay annually to save up to 30% and get a free domain for the first year.
  • 2.Use a student discount (50% off first year) if eligible. That drops Basic to just $96 for year one.
  • 3.Buy your domain elsewhere (Namecheap, Cloudflare) for $10 to $15/year instead of renewing through Squarespace at $20 to $70/year.
  • 4.Use Zoho Mail's free tier instead of Google Workspace at $7/user/month for basic email needs.
  • 5.Use Calendly's free tier for appointment booking instead of Acuity Scheduling at $14 to $45/month.
  • 6.Use Mailchimp's free tier (500 contacts) instead of Squarespace Email Campaigns at $7/month if you are just starting out.
  • 7.Start with Core instead of Plus or Advanced. Upgrade only when you hit a specific feature limit.
  • 8.Embed YouTube or Vimeo videos instead of using Squarespace-hosted video to stay within storage limits.
